Can someone please provide me some guidance/support?
I was involved in a VERY MINOR fender bender back on July 14th. The police came out, saw insufficient damage to do a police report, and told me to exchange my information with the driver. Having worked for my town’s police department, I know that an accident report will be done if the damage is over $ 500.
As I said, no report was done and I am now facing an estimate for over $ 1300 for an accident that was judged to be under $ 500. We did not attempt to go through insurance, we attempted to handle this like adults but now I feel like I am being taken advantage of in this situation.
Has anyone had similiar occurences? Can anyone be of guidance? I don’t know what to do or where to go from here on this matter.
For a point of reference, this happened in NJ.
In my town the Police WILL NOT, let me repeat, WILL NOT do a police report unless they “feel” it is over $ 500 worth of damage.
I used to work for the department that handled the filing of reports, so I know.
You can demand until you turn blue in the face, but it does you know good.

i had someone try to pull this one over on me back in 01,i demanded a police report and then reported this to my insurance company they took the guys license because to find out he didn’t have no insurance,and it was the officer who recommended we handle it among our self, i doubt that he got in any trouble over it but i know the guy that hit me lost his license for lack of insurance and had to pay for the damage to my car,don’t settle for less than what is due to you,if you do you,ll have to pay for this out of pocket,good luck.
